Wear Rating System:

While the composition of tiles may differ, the most important attribute to a tile is its wear rating. The wear rating is a tile’s ability to resist scratching from surface abrasion. The chart below shows how tiles are rated. Keep in mind all 3 types of tiles described above come with various ratings, but through-bodied porcelains usually carry the highest rating of 5 - all residential and commercial use.

Wear Rating System:

Class 1: Wall Application Only.

Class 2: Light Residential Use. Class 2 tiles must not be used in residential areas that are subject to constant or heavy traffic. (i.e., kitchen)

Class 3: Residential Applications. Class 3 tiles are suitable for all residential applications.

Class 4: All Residential and Light Commercial Applications. Class 4 tiles may be used in all residential areas and light commercial applications. (i.e., restaurants, offices)

Class 5: Suitable for all Residential and Commercial Application. Class 5 tiles are suitable for all applications including those with heavy traffic and constant use. (i.e., Shopping Malls, Hospitals)

Choosing A Size:

Tiles are available in many sizes. The recent trend has been toward larger tiles for floor and wall applications. 13″ x 13″ has been our most popular size for floors and 8″ x 10″ the most popular for walls. The up and coming sizes are 16″ x 16″ for floors and 8″ x 12″ for walls. The reason? Larger tiles make a space appear…larger. The Rules of Color:

Of course, only you can decide what color is right for you, but here are a few basic rules to remember: Lighter colors make a space appear larger. Darker colors add warmth and hide dirt well. Neutral colors allow you to change your accessories but if you love a trendy color, go for it! Just keep in mind it will be with you a long time. The color shade or shades of all tile varies some degree from piece to piece, from each production run to run. At least several pieces from the same production run should be reviewed whenever possible to determine acceptable color shade variations. Texture Tips:

Generally speaking, textured or matte finish tiles are less slippery than smooth or shiny tiles - something to keep in mind when choosing floor tiles. A tile’s “slip resistance” is measured by its “coefficient of friction,” which is provided by some manufacturers.

Rustic or stone-looking tiles are extremely popular because they fit in with any decor and are excellent at hiding dirt. Marbleized tiles lend a more formal look. Lately we have seen national driving schools offering lessons for a very cheap price. Is it therefore really possible to make a good living as a driving instructor as the advertising would have us believe?

I believe that there are currently twice as many instructors as there were 4/5 years ago and new pupils wanting to learn to drive are down about 5% over the same period. Very competitive times indeed and offers like those of the national driving schools are indicative of this situation.

Resting on ones laurels is no longer an option and any instructor/driving school needs to be very pro-active if they are to sustain, or dare I say grow, their business. This would include networking, a website for your driving school (not a stale historic site but an evolving, growing site - pupil testimonials is a must), directory listings etc. Yes, it may be a bit of work but, being an independent driving instructor is not a job, it is a business - your business.

Additional info - come on, is that all they really offer? What about some background, track record, pass rates, type of car, why they are different/unique etc. Entice them to make some sort of contact with you.

Like it or not, it is a sales process/advert and prospects are likely to be attracted to a listing that has a little more to say about themselves - prospects are searching for information to make a decision about who should they be starting driving lessons with - help them make their decision! Don’t rely on them phoning you to start a relationship, you just may not get that far!

I think what I am trying to say here is that I am sure there are better things to compete on other than just price. If everyone did that we as driving instructors may well be registering as charities as part of the training process in the not too distant future.

Thomas Skalak, professor and chair of biomedical engineering at UV, has been studying the effectiveness of magnetic therapy for several years. Skalak is an expert in microcirculation research–the study of blood flow through tiny blood vessels. With this background, he began investigating whether or not magnets increase blood flow - one of the major claims made by companies that sell magnets.

Until now, many critics of magnetic therapy have believed that the magnetic field generated by medical magnets could only reach a few millimeters into the skin - not enough to affect the blood vessels. People who claimed to have felt better after using magnetic field were thought to be experiencing a placebo effect. Nevertheless, the US magnetic therapy industry sells more than $300 million per year of “pseudoscience” magnets. The majority of these in the form of magnetic bracelets and magnetic golf bracelets.

Now, Skalak and his team have shown in the peer-reviewed American Journal of Physiology that a magnetic field - created by magnets with a strength of 70 milliTesla, or about 10 times the strength of refrigerator magnets - could cause blood vessels with dilated walls to relax and constrict, which increases blood flow through the vessels.

Increasing blood flow could be used to reduce the swelling of muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues, Skalak explains. Swelling is a very common side effect of minor and major injuries, such as muscle bruising and joint sprains.

“If an injury doesn’t swell, it will heal faster–and the person will experience less pain and better mobility,” says Skalak. If used immediately after an injury, the magnets could reduce the swelling of sprains, bumps, and bruises much like ice packs and compression are used - but with more beneficial results.

The researchers’ experiment demonstrated the effectiveness of the magnets on rats. They first treated the hind paws of the rats with an inflammatory agent that caused tissue swelling, and then applied magnets to find that the swelling subsided. The team also took quantitative measurements of the rats’ blood vessel diameter before and after the magnetic therapy to confirm the results.

Skalak and his team are supported by a five-year, $875,000 grant from the National Institute of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The researchers plan to continue studying the optimal field strength of the magnets at specific tissue locations - a precision that most commercially available magnets don’t currently have.
